Grad Meets World

4 Signs That You May Be an Entrepreneur at Heart

My boss told me the other day that I have a head for business. She also mentioned how she gets the idea that I had probably never even fathomed the thought before.

She’s right.

I didn’t know I had a head for business until AFTER college. Believe me, if I had known I probably would have majored in something else (although I do love English!)

But sometimes life works out that way. It’s not until we’re put in a situation (in my case six months of unemployment) that we realize our potential.

And it’s not really our faults either. I mean, we’re conditioned most of our lives to believe that we have to work for someone else or some big ass corporation. The 401k is a sign of professional success. Health insurance is damn near impossible to afford if your employer isn’t helping (not necessarily true although a major pain in the ass). The corner office is our ultimate professional goal.

That’s all fine and dandy, but some of us find ourselves thinking, “Ok, and then what? What comes after the corner office? Is that it?

Some of us have a drive for more and you might too. Below you’ll find a few signs that you may be an entrepreneur at heart.

1. The thought of spending 8 hours a day in a cubicle makes you cringe (and you actually try to do something about it).

This applies to more than just entrepreneurs, but entrepreneurs seem to be the only ones who ever even try to do something about it. Maybe you make jewelery on the side, maybe you enjoy blogging, maybe you have dreams of teaching yoga. Whatever the case may be, entrepreneurs always have ideas of how to achieve life OUTSIDE of the cubicle. And little by little, the entrepreneurial spirit works toward these goals on the side of their day job (Shout out to Cordelia Calls It Quits! Check out the interview if you haven’t already). Some may even be doing this and not even realize it.

2. You find yourself possessing crazy energy, drive and motivation when working on a project.

Entrepreneurs get excited about their work. Maybe you don’t necessarily have the “work” part yet, but you do have something that excites you. Something that quite possibly could help you create a living if looked at from a different perspective.

3. You have a natural inclination toward bettering the business.

This is something you’ll notice at your job. The entrepreneurial spirit is the one with the ideas on how to land more clients and customers. It’s the spirit that has ideas on how to market or better the processes of the current structure. Most of all, this stuff actually interests you!

4. You’re willing to make some sacrifices.

Entrepreneurship comes with sacrifice…especially at first. The entrepreneurial spirit understands that some sacrifice now will benefit them later on as they build their career. If you have a good understanding of this and know what it takes then you may just be an entrepreneur at heart!

And lost but not least, I really couldn’t resist posting this…

Millenial Mavericks – Entrepreneurship – Lindsay Hunt from The Boomerang Kid

We’re not all cut out for the 9 to 5 gig. Some of us have dreams and aspirations of creating our own work and running the show. This takes hard work, dedication and sometimes sacrifice.

Fortunately we have awesome bloggers like Lindsay Hunt who teach us that we CAN be our own boss. After working in the corporate landscape and literally living all over the world, Lindsay decided it was high time she took matters into her own hands. She quit her job, moved back home with mom and dad and launched her own social media management company. Last but not least she started The Boomerang Kid, a place where she chronicles her entrepreneurial journey while living in Denver again.

In this interview we discuss tips for running your own business and time management. We also discuss tips for moving back home with the rents – something more and more college grads find themselves doing these days.

Career Week Link Love

Given that this week is focusing on loving your career as a Gen Y professional I figured I would create a list of cool stuff I’ve seen across the web. It’s been a long time since I’ve compiled a list like this and I know many of you benefit from them :)

If you haven’t already done so make sure to check the awesome Millenial Maverick Interview with Jana Schuberth where we discuss how to love work now. Also make sure to read about some awesome online networking tools that are sure to help you with your career.

Now, as for the other stuff…

How to Not Miss Life While Working – YouTern

This is super important – probably more important than any other article on here! This is a lesson I had to learn the hard way last year. If I’m not careful I  kind of turn into a work-a-holic. I found myself making excuses like “I’m just too tired from working” or “I can’t have a lot of work to do” whenever cool stuff came up. Needless to say, although the fruits of my labor were showing, the only place that got me was sick and stressed. This year I’ve made it a point to take better care of myself and take steps to actually enjoy my life instead of spending it working.

Everybody Starts Somewhere – Life After College

This is also incredibly important to remember whether you’re working for yourself or someone else. Many of us are just starting our adventure in the professional world and are so ANXIOUS to already have it all figured out. Get over it. No one has it figured out at first and everybody starts in the same place: somewhere.

(P.S. Those of you who are subscribed to the email list received the Start Somewhere Challenge this week! If you’d like cool personal development challenges sent straight to your inbox make sure to join the email list!)

5 Skills That Will Drastically Improve Your Professional Street Cred – Brazen Careerist

Great article that discusses some skills you’ll need in this job market. The best part? I’m sure most of you already have some of these!

Do You Have Unrealistic Job Search Expectations? – Brazen Careerist

This is the latest post I wrote for Brazen Careerist which was inspired by all the young college grads I interview every week. It’s great to have big dreams, but make sure you know what kind of market you’re dealing with before you come off as unrealistic and unhireable.

Strategies for Job Hunting in Our Current Economy – Corn on the Job

A very valuable resource for any of you who are just beginning your first job search or looking to change jobs. Remember, it’s not mom and dad’s market anymore!

How to Find the Right Job for Your Personality – Classy Career Girl

Great article about finding a job that you will LOVE! Despite the current state of the economy, it’s still important to try to find a job you actually like. After all, who wants to spend 8 hours a day hating their job?

Hope these inspire you! Happy Friday!

4 Online Networking Tools for the Gen Y Professional

Out of all the career related posts I’ve written, I can’t think of one instance that was solely dedicated to networking. Sure, I’ve tipped my hat to it here and there, but I’ve never really delved into the idea of networking for the Gen Y professional.

Once again things are different in the realm of Gen Y. Happy Hour networking events (while still awesome) have been joined by a myriad of different tactics to expand your professional network.

Let’s remember that the internet has made it easier than ever to cross over borders and meet new and interesting people. The same thing applies for career opportunities. Below you’ll find a list of some of my personal favorites when it comes to networking.

1. Blogging

Yes, believe it or not running this little blog has tremendously expanded my network. Thanks to Grad Meets World I’ve not only been able to reach out to others, but others have been able to reach out to me.

I have learned so much from the people I have met through this blog and I hope to continue expanding my horizons. (You can meet a few of them on my Vimeo page!)

You too can start your own blog and help like-minded individuals find you. After all, you know you’ve always wanted to and there is no time like the present.

2. Online Communities

I am currently a member of two online communities: 20sb and HerFuture. Both have helped me connect with like-minded individuals while expanding my personal and professional networks.

Start by finding online communities that resonate with you. In my case, one community is geared toward millenial bloggers while the other is a community for kick ass women that was created by one of my favorite speakers. If I could find an awesome community for yoga bloggers I’d join that one too  :)

3. LinkedIn

LinkedIn, and more specifically LinkedIn Groups, is a great way to increase your network or start building your own following. Since the entire site is geared toward professional networking you’ll have no problem finding what you need – whether it’s finding a client, a professional friend or a job.

4. Brazen Careerist Network Roulette

This is by far one of the coolest things online for Gen Y professionals. I myself have met some awesome people and been presented with writing opportunities for participating in these online events.

The concept is simple – it’s like speed dating for jobs. You sign on and start chatting. Once your time is up you’re automatically moved to the next person. I personally love that there is no time to beat around the bush because of the time limit. You are connected to someone, you get to the point and amazing things happen on the professional (and sometimes personal) level.

Sound Off

Thanks to the internet we now have more ways than ever to expand our horizons – professional networks included! What are some of your favorite ways to network?

4 Tips for Adding More Spice to Your Life

Schnebly Redlands Winery – Homestead, FL

I’ve already written posts about how we shouldn’t get stuck in the mundane and how to have some semblance of work/life balance. I’ve also written posts about how to manage stress and stay happy at work. Now I’m taking it a step further by helping you add some spice to your life

Because you see, the easiest way to avoid both unnecessary stress and getting stuck in a rut is by adding some spice to your life. And contrary to popular belief, it really doesn’t take some extraordinary act in order to achieve this. It doesn’t involve a new romantic partner, a new job, a crazy vacation or any other sort of future happenings. All it really takes is the willingness to explore new things right here and now.

1. Use Your Weekends for Local Adventures

This past weekend I did something hadn’t done since I was a kid – I went down South to Homestead to go farm hopping. I also did some wine tasting at a South Florida Winery that makes crazy wines out of fruits like avocado and mango. Last but not least I went to go check out a Buddhist temple because I’d never seen one before.

Use your weekends for local adventures. I bet there’s a lot in your area you have yet to discover and there’s no better time than now to start exploring.

2. Try Something New Every Week

This was one of my main goals in 2011 that unfortunately got put on the back burner. Each week for the rest of 2012 decide on something new you’d like to try – and then make it a point to go after it! If one a week is too much cut it down to once or twice or month. The point is to open your horizons and explore new things you may have not done otherwise.

Want to know what’s on my list for the next few weeks?

- Tai Chi class

- The Coral Gables Farmer’s Market

- Going to the shooting range and learning to shoot a gun

- Ayruveda

- Miami International Film Festival

- A group coaching course with Gabrielle Bernstein

- St. Sophia’s Annual Greek Festival

Those are just a few on the list for this year :)

3. Take a class at a community college and learn something new.

I haven’t done this yet, but one of my coworkers periodically signs up for crafting classes at the local community college. It’s a great way to de-stress, get the creative juices flowing and continue learning new things. Community colleges are also usually very decently priced so take advantage! Keep in mind that it doesn’t have to be crafting, it can be anything you have an interest in.

4. Volunteer

One of the best ways to get some feel good vibes is by volunteering. Pick a weekend out of the month to lend your services to a local cause or event. You’ll feel great that you helped other people and you can always learn a thing or two from volunteering.

These are just a few ways to start adding some spice to your life.

What do you do to add spice and variety? Feel free to share in the comments section!

Yoga Workshop(s) Final Update + Millenial Mavericks Interviews on the way!

January 2012 has probably been the best January of my life. Simple because I actually went out there and stuck to my New Year’s resolution to do more yoga. I am up to day 39 of daily yoga and meditation and completed two workshops in January. The first being a small intro course and the second being a Meditation 101 workshop where we learned the benefits of taking a step back and listening to your breath.

Intro to Yoga Workshop – I Graduated! Lol.

This workshop allowed me to really use some of the principles I learned in class and at home. It also allowed me to make friends with people in my community and get to know an awesome yoga instructor on a deeper level than just being a student in her uber popular classes. Most of all it opened my eyes to the importance of prioritizing mind and body health.

Ok, so it’s common knowledge that being healthy is good for you – but thanks to my current job where I interview job candidates and this workshop I’ve realized that too much work without healthy habits is a sure fire way to end up sick or with some sort of other ailment. I’ve even started watching what I eat more closely – something I pretty much have never done in my life.

Mediation 101 Workshop

Most people freak out when they hear the word meditation. I know I did – mostly because of my Catholic upbringing which turns out was slightly (though not completely) misinformed. In actuality several religions, traditions and cultures across the globe all encourage some form of meditation – whether it’s praying, dancing or chanting in Sanskrit. Want to know why? Besides the divine qualities these societies believe in, meditation actually does help with the stresses of life.

Sitting still while focusing on your breathing allows you to turn inward. It allows you to really sit and get comfortable with yourself – and at times even your fears. It allows you to experience moments of calm amid this crazy ass world we live in. And it has a whole slew of insanely awesome health benefits of which some of them include increasing serotonin, balancing out your blood pressure, decreasing your chances of heart disease and overall helping you become a cool cucumber during stressful situations.

Calming me down and crazy good health benefits? Yes, please!

And because I couldn’t help myself, here’s a quick health update vlog.

3 Tips for Blancing Work and Your Personal Life

Upon entering adulthood there is something I have noticed among my peers and the job candidates I encounter everyday – people are working now more than ever.

Sometimes I’ll speak with job candidates who were working 60+ hours a week for their current or previous employer. The really extreme cases even claim that their marriages fell apart because of the hours they were putting in at work. Sometimes we’ll get job orders from companies that require 50+ hour work weeks. All the while I’m here thinking “What the hell happened to 9  to 5 and then you’re off the clock to do whatever you want?”

Then of course there are those of us who work full time and in addition have a side hustle going to make some extra money. Needless to say we also end up putting in countless hours working nights and weekends, the only difference being we actually like what we do – most of the time, anyway.

And so the entire notion of work/life balance has become like this buzz word for our generation. We saw how much our parents worked. We see how our society works themselves to the bone. And we’re starting to feel it in our own lives as we enter the professional world. Above all, we see the negative impacts it has had on the lives of others both mentally and phsyically – and we’re scared out of our minds to have the same fate.

So what’s a young lad to do when they’re overworked and bummed out by the (misinformed) idea that that’s just the way things are?

Make a change in their lives, that’s what.

1. Take inventory. Where are you feeling off-balance?

When we’re feeling off-balance in an aspect of our lives our minds and bodies certainly let us know. Maybe you feel achy in one part of your body. Maybe your brain can’t shut up about something and it’s dragging you down. Whatever the case, we know very well when something needs to change. We just choose to ignore it most of the time.

So start taking inventory of when you feel funky. This will help you figure out what aspects of your life need a little shift. Maybe your body is telling you to start exercising. Maybe you feel like you need to spend more time with your friends and family. Maybe you need to take a day off from work. Whatever the case may be, tune in to what your mind and body are telling you.

I personally do this with a little Moleskin notebook. Per the Rx of Gabrielle Bernstein I’ve begun to check myself every hour on the hour with the help of constant reminders on my Blackberry.. On the front of the notebook I wrote “Change Your Perspective Today” on a label. I’ve started to take this with me everywhere I go. I even take some time to check myself and write in it before yoga in order to help me set an intention.

2. Actually make the change!

While it’s very true that change begins with a mere thought, you actually have to take action. It’s easy to sit at your desk bitching about how you work too much while not actually taking the time to go do something like exercise. If you’re just waiting for the circumstances to change you’re going to be in the same state of mind for a long time.

Instead of just waiting for the change to occur, make it happen! Prioritize people! If you want to start going to the gym more often, put it on the effing calendar and just go. If you want to spend time with your family make the time to spend with them. Simply put, stop making excuses and start taking some action.

3.Don’t feel guilty if you can’t do something. Your work/life balance may not be the same as someone else’s.

Oh, I’ve had a problem with this for some time. I’d overschedule myself thinking that I had to do all these extra activities to balance out my work life only to feel tired and give up on half of them. I would then feel guilty for not having achieved the coveted “work/life balance” picture I had envisioned in my head.

To quote my dear blogger friend Diana Antholis, (paraphrasing of course. Diana feel free to correct me.) “Work/Life balance doesn’t mean that everything is linear. It doesn’t mean that you spend the same x amount of hours at work and at play. It means prioritizing those things that matter to you and making time for them in your schedule.”

So now instead of running to a million different activities, which was neither balancing nor good for my health, I’m focusing on the few that matter. The best part is I don’t feel guilty about it anymore because I have finally learned that my version of work/life balance isn’t necessarily the same as someone else’s.

Gen Y Money Goals for 2012

I’ve been meaning to write this post for a while. Namely because I’ve been so busy lately that I completely forgot to write down my money goals for 2012. Also, I was still in the midst of resolving the whole “a job candidate stole my wallet” fiasco.

Now that I’m settled in with a new bank THAT I LOVE, paid off the post-Christmas/post-I didn’t have a debit card debt and paid off my yoga/personal development spree I can get back to focusing on my money.

Last year was all about creating a savings plan, getting my retirement/brokerage accounts going and growing my side hustle. This year I’m taking it a step further.

Get Back into My Savings Plan Groove

When we’ve been rocked financially – like I was when my wallet was stolen – it can be hard to get back on track with your money. Really hard. It wasn’t even until a couple of weeks ago that I was able to close my Bank of America account and deposit the money I had in there into my new bank account. That alone caused me a ridiculous amount of stress.

But now it’s time to get my head back in the game.

I’ve had a savings plan set up since last year that worked wonders for my bank account (you can read more about it in my ebook) and I need to get back to doing that. Hopefully this year I can save even MORE money.

Get an Accountant.

Yeah, it’s great to have those at-home tax programs but sometimes we can miss things. Besides once you add retirement accounts, investments and your side hustle money into the mix things can start getting a little complicated.

I’ve never been good with numbers (hence I’m an English major). With that being said it’s time for someone to get themselves an accountant.

(P.S. Anyone in the Miami area have any recommendations?)

Learn the Difference Between What I Want and What I Need.

This is a HUGE one. I spent way too much money in 2011 on stuff I thought I needed – both in my personal life, my blog and my side hustle. I thought I was making investments I would actually follow through on (*ahem* going to the gym).

This year my goal is to learn the difference between what I want and what I need so as not to get lured by shiny things or unnecessary business investments.

Prioritize The Things I Want.

Everyone needs to learn to prioritize their extra spending money – especially those of us who like to be very active and try new things.

Some decisions are simple, you need to pay rent more than you need a new pair of shoes. Some other decisions may be a little cloudy, a yoga workshop or that awesome coaching course. Both are things that will help me and both are things I’d really like to do.

Obviously money isn’t infinite and we can’t always do it all, so we have to learn to prioritize. Or, at the very least, make a list so you do one at a time. When you are participating in one you can start saving money for the next one on your list.

Read The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham.

This book has been sitting on my bookshelf since I bought it almost a year ago. It’s not that I don’t like to read and learn new things, it’s that I hate numbers. In other words when you’re explaining things like ROI and market fluctuations I get lost. As a result, it takes me a bit longer to really comprehend these things. This year I will finally get through the book and apply it’s principles to my own investments and retirement account.

Perhaps these goals are not as specific as last year, but definitely just as necessary as I learn to manage my money.

What are your money goals for 2012?
